Last week, the Southeast Asian Regional Office of the World Health Organization held a meeting of the National Programme Managers and the Regional Technical Advisory Group (RTAG) on Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 25-27 June 2024.
The RTAG for Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination, comprised of experts in epidemiology, chemotherapy, entomology, laboratory science, statistics, social science, morbidity management, disability prevention, and programme management related to lymphatic filariasis elimination, will play an important role in providing evidence-based recommendations to WHO. These recommendations aim to accelerate progress towards the 2030 global elimination targets for lymphatic filariasis in the Region. The RTAG serves as the principal advisory group to WHO/SEARO for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis in the WHO South-East Asia Region.
Dr. Alison Krentel was pleased to attend this meeting as an RTAG member and learn about the progress the region has made towards the elimination of LF. However, challenges remain in the endgame, including the identification of never-treated individuals and the development of approaches to address never-treatment. Dr. Krentel presented the progress made on the development of a WHO/PAHO toolkit on never-treatment, soliciting input for its revision and further improvement as a practical tool for program managers and partners.
